In 2012, five artist groups collaborated to promote an urban art tour in the heart of Saskatoon. Now in its fourth year, Art Trek 2015 will feature nine artist studios and collectives. We were invited to participate this year to showcase the lost art of traditional stone carving.
Stone carving is an ancient activity where pieces of rough natural stone are shaped by the controlled removal of stone. Owing to the permanence of the material, stone work has survived which was created during our prehistory.
Now some history on Ryan Watson, Owner and the Stone Carver of Rocco Masons Corporation:
Ryan was born in 1976 and raised in Saskatoon, SK. He studied for 3 years in Perth Ontario and was awarded a Diploma in Heritage and Traditional Masonry as well as Heritage Restoration both from Ontario. In 2010 he was awarded a Heritage Award in the city of Saskatoon, SK for the stone carving and masonry on the King George restoration project. He has carvings installed on buildings from west coast Canada to Chicago Illinois. With over 13 years of experience in the trade, Watson, continues his dedication to the art of stone carving and provides our clients with the highest quality European craftsmanship and designs.
If you’ve ever been curious we invite you to come down to witness some LIVE STONE CARVING action at our carving shop which is locating in the Lauriston Street Studio’s ( #510 ) from 10am-5pm this Saturday, June 13th. Feel free to forward this on to anyone that you think might be curious or interested in making their residential or commercial project stand out from the rest.
