WHAT'S WATSON CARVING NOW?

Our Stone Carver, Ryan Watson was honored when asked to take on this project. Watson worked diligently with the home owners to design their very own personalized Family Crest. Watson uses both a pneumatic hammer as well as a mallet and chisel to create all of his hand carved pieces. The pneumatic hammer dates back to 1880 and helps to speed up the process. The chisels used are the same, but the difference is that in the same amount of the time it takes the pneumatic hammer to produce 100 small strokes, the hand mallet produces around 10 strokes. Watson continues to use hand mallets when working on the more intricate areas of his carvings achieving what you see here.  Stay tuned for this weeks progress, installation pics to follow!

Above are some of the chisels Our Stone Carver, Ryan Watson bought while working with Walter S. Arnold on the Chicago Board of Trade building.  These tools predate the depression of 1929, most of which have the carvers names punched right into them from over 80 years ago!

The family crest will soon be installed above this double-sided fireplace which we did the masonry for early summer. This fireplace stands at the homes newly renovated grand entrance.

WATSON IN THE 90's LEARNING THE TRADE

Who is the Stone Carver?

Ryan Watson was born in 1976, raised in Saskatoon, SK, and is proud of his prairie roots.
He’s a natural born artist in a trade that dates back to the beginning of civilization and uses the most modern tools to promote one of the oldest trades, Stone Masonry and Stone Carving.

In the late 90's Watson received a Diploma in Heritage & Traditional Masonry and Heritage Restoration, both from Ontario (pictured here). From there he formed a Masonry company in Saskatoon specializing in hand-carved stone and restoration. In 2010 Watson received a Heritage Award from the City of Saskatoon for the historical design of his hand-carved entryways on the King George Hotel.

Watson continues to run a successful Masonry business named ROCCO MASONS with his business partner and wife Nicolene Watson, Director of Finance, Marketing & Human Resources. Together they're a match made in heaven both personally and business wise.  Their company is sought after for offering Stone Carving & Masonry Design services from both Commercial & Residential markets, being one of the few Masonry companies that offer these services. Watson uses his extensive knowledge and experience in the trade to offer superior Masonry Consultation’s working closely with Builders, Designers, Architects and Owners. In doing so, their company produces some the most exclusive Masonry Designs around.

A few projects to date include the Timber Pointe building behind Earls, the recently renovated McDougal Gauley building on Broadway (now Una + Pizza, Freshii & Ryde YXE), and we can't forget to mention the award winning Stone Carving & Masonry currently on the King George Hotel. Some residential works include Stone Carvings and Masonry for many homes on Sask Crescent and University Drive including the Historical Hopkins House, which will is currently featured in Saskatoon’s Home Magazine, winter edition.

Currently, Watson's been in their carving shop full time and at the halfway point carving a family crest in limestone that will be installed above a fireplce. Stay tuned for photo's on this project and more and be sure to find us on all social media outlets including our YouTube channel! #tbt
